As for serving in the military, due to poverty which has contributed to sign ups from this region, (TN) is what's different from where you are (CA) is why would rich people in a seriously upper class part of the country join the military? That's why when you talk with people there (CA) and the subject of "Service" (military) comes up, they don't get you.
